All players are required to have a mouth guard at all practices and games.
It is imperative that all players wear a mouthguard to practices and games. Your child's safety is our biggest concern. These can be purchased for a few dollars at any Walmart or Sports store.

Wolverines win Trophies at Fullerton Tournament
Congratulations to our Wolverines on a tremendous effort at the 4th annual Fullerton Tournament last Saturday. We fielded an Under 8, Under 10 and Under 12 team.
The Under 8s were awesome and made the finals . They came home with the second place trophy . With all the kids playing so well, John Hooker with great defense, Cameron Martyn playing hooker like a pro, Angus Bent with a terrific try, Brandon Summerville with some darting runs , and Jamie Lipman scoring 6 tries,  Alec Neimand had some great runs and distributed the ball beautifully. Alec has really improved so much this season. Well done all

Our U10's almost made the finals and then won the 3rd place trophy by beating Santa Monica handily .
Our U12's were amazing in their improvement every game, and missed making the semi finals by one try.
Thanks to all the coaches and parents that made it out to Fullerton. I am sure they will agree that it was a very exciting and fun day for all.

This past weekend we had our final fixture at Santa Monica Rugby Club and had a great turnout in all three age groups. The kids played very well as usual.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the kids and parents for participating this season and making it a very fulfilling one. We had over 65 signed up kids and the kids were really a pleasure to coach.
Thanks to all the coaches who gave of their time, including, Paul, Greg, Andrew, Rob, Gary, and Terry. Thanks also to Jaqueline and Charles Stanford and especially to Tony Spinella who works tirelessly for youth rugby.
I hope I have not missed anyone.
We will see if we can arrange a get together at Casa De Pizza to have a final get together. Watch for more info.
Next season will begin in the first week of January, but watch the website at www.westvalleyrugby.com and emails for more information. We will probably have sign ups in December.
Our goal for next season will be to have over 100 signed up kids, and ensure a vibrant internal league with great opportunities for external fixtures as well.
Once again
Thanks

Season Update
Well we completed our season opener on Saturday and it was a great success. The kids had a great time and probably slept very sell on Saturday evening as we ran them for three hours.

Some important points of clarification:
MOUTHGUARDS
Kids must bring mouth guards. Even though we are not playing tackle, there is some element of contact similar to basketball.
If the kids do not have mouth guards they will not be able to play in the games.

Practices .
We will meet every Wednesday at 4pm until dark. Now approx 5pm to 5-15pm
Will be later as the sun sets later.
Saturdays will be at 9am till 12am at AC Stelle
Please check the website at www.westvalleyrugby.com for the schedule . We do have a few away fixtures later on. Will be updated as the season progresses

New kids
If you know anyone who wants to try it out, please encourage them to come.
They do NOIT have to sign up until they have tried it.
They do have to have a release signed and bring a mouth guard

Attendance
We recognize that some of the kids have other obligations and cannot make all the practices or games.
No problem. As long as they can attend whatever they can , they will still experience the fun and joy of playing
Let them come to whatever they can. Everyone plays and we will ensure that every kid regardless of skill, age or experience will play.
This is a teaching program and even though we will play against other clubs, our goal is for the kids to have a blast and learn the basics of the game.

No Fullerton Tournament this week 1/27/2007
We will have a session tomorrow 1/24/2007 at 4pm to approx 5:15. at Ac Stelle Upper fields.

On Saturday we are NOT going to Fullerton. We will be having an internal tournament at AC Stelle Lower fields.

Please remember to bring mouth guards and water.. Even though we are playing non tackle there is some incidental contact and a chance for an accidental collision.

Saturday please be there by 9am. We will go until around 12.

See you all there

COACHING CLINIC NOV 18
As we get ready for the 2008 season, we have identified all of you as being part of the team that will help move the club forward .

In order for us to manage the growth of the club we have to have more people who can help with coaching.

I am sure many of you are thinking that you do not know enough about rugby to contribute. Well that did not stop me from coaching baseball.

The truth is all the fundamentals of coaching kids, regardless of the sport are the same. Teaching teamwork, dedication, ensuring the kids have fun. These are all the same.

The rest can all be imparted to you.

In order to start that process, we will be having a COACHES CLINIC on November 18, Sunday at AC Stelle from 1pm to 5pm.

It would be great if you can attend. No matter how much time you may have available to contribute next season, anything you can do will go a long way of helping move the club forward. As most of you know , this cannot be done by just two or three people. Our goal is to really have Wolverines Youth Rugby be a great alternative for kids in the valley and just last season we had over 80 kids participating.

The goal of the clinic is to impart our coaching philosophy and pass on some of the fundamental building blocks to help you understand what we are trying to teach the kids. The best way to learn is to do and you will all be participating as if you are participants in a practice.

If anything,  it will be great fun.

I look forward to seeing you all there and any one else you know who would like to get more involved. Please let me know your availability and ability to get more involved in this next season

Thanks

Here's the schedule for Saturday.  The "upper division" kids all get one game; "lower division" each get two (though smaller duration).
Please remember that we all have new players on our teams and safety is paramount.  Also, our friends from View Park Prep will be joining us at all age levels -- sometimes a couple players will need to fill in on a team, in other instances they'll supply a full side.  The idea is for us all to have a great day of rugby and encourage all the kids.

Please confirm you got this schedule and you don't foresee any problems.
Field is at:
Daniel Webster Middle School
11330 Graham Pl.
Los Angeles, CA 90064
Gates are open early.   Please no DOGS -- we will lose our permit.
Have your parents park on the street as there are other groups who use the campus on Saturdays.  I suggest parking on Butler Ave (west side of campus, parallel to Sawtelle);  there is a gate you can walk through at Brookhaven.
Look forward to seeing you.

Wolverines in the News
Local youngsters develop a passion for rugby
By Thomas Gase tgase@theacorn.com
Typically, when the words "offensive lineman" roll off the tongue, compliments such as "nice hands" or "fast runner" don't follow.
With the continued growth of the West Valley Wolverines, a youth rugby club in Calabasas, more kids are finding out that linemen can put points on the scoreboard, too.
Shawn Lipman, a former member of the United States national team and president of the Wolverines, said watching rugby is a little different from watching your typical American football game.
"It's such a great game because everyone on the field is constantly involved," Lipman said.
"In rugby, not only are linemen able to catch the ball and score, but it happens all the time. The sport is very aerobic because you're running the whole game, and it teaches you hand-eye coordination and the proper use of teamwork."
Club board member Paul Delbick said it's been a pleasure watching his son Ben play.
"When (Ben) plays football, he's a lineman, so he doesn't touch the ball often," Delbick said. "But it's great to see him in rugby get to carry the ball and run with it. His eyes light up when he scores a touchdown."
The Wolverines consist of five age groups—co-ed 8-year-old and under, as well as boys' leagues for 10-and-under, 12-and-under and 14-and-under. There's also a newly formed high school league.
The club began shortly after Lipman spoke with Tony Spinella, the founder of the Wolverines.
"It was about six years ago, and I was taking my kid to his basketball game when I ran into Spinella," Lipman said. "Spinella had worked at the administrative level in rugby for a while, and he was trying to introduce kids to the sport.
"We talked about forming a youth league, and it wasn't long before we started to take it more seriously."
Two years ago, only 30 kids were in the club. Those 30 members started to tell their friends, and the next season the club doubled in size. These days, there are approximately 80 kids in the Wolverines' program.
One of the kids that began playing during the Wolverines' inception was 10-year-old Jamie Lipman.
"I've been playing for about five years, but there is footage of me playing the game as early as when I was 2," Jamie Lipman said.
"I also play football for the Calabasas Raiders, but I love rugby a little more. In football, you run a play and then stop to come back to the huddle. In rugby, there are no huddles. It's nonstop."
The club meets on Wednesdays and Saturdays to play innerclub games. Shawn Lipman said the Wolverine squads are all about having fun, and he isn't looking for it to become too serious. All games are placed at A.C. Stelle Middle School in Calabasas.
"We're trying to build internally and have a nice recreational league," Shawn Lipman said. "We don't travel too much, and we try to keep things easy. We teach the game to kids in building blocks so they can improve each day."
Previously, the club played without contact, but after many kids kept asking, the Wolverines finally went to tackle this season.
In order to play a game, kids must wear protective head gear and a mouthpiece at all times.
"Luckily, we haven't seen any significant injuries the whole time I've been here," Shawn Lipman said.
"What's nice is one of our coaches is a doctor, so in case something goes wrong, we do have someone with a medical background."
Jamie Lipman said a new player should still do his research before deciding to compete.
"You can still get hurt, so you want to know what you're doing," Jamie Lipman said. "Coaches go over and over in practice with us the correct ways to tackle people. We don't want anyone breaking a neck or anything."
Shawn Lipman said a lot of work goes into organizing the five teams, but at the end of the day, it's all worth it.
"When you see 80 kids playing, I mean really playing and loving it, that's the best part of this league for me," Shawn Lipman said.
"The league has really grown, and now, more and more, you are seeing kids that want to carry on playing after the day is done."
Anyone interested in joining the league can visit the website www.westvalleyrugby.com for more information.

On behalf of the Wolverines, I would like to thank all the kids and supportive parents for another great season. We hope the kids had a great time and enjoyed playing Rugby this season.

The kids showed great promise and we were especially heartened by the success of our U10 players, which really bodes well for the future of the program.

Thanks to all the coaches who gave of their time this season .

Very Important Parents Meeting Oct 28 2009
Hi All
I hope you are all having a great year and enjoying whatever activities your kids are participating in at the moment.
With the 2010 season approaching we as a club have come to a crossroads. We have grown the club and enjoyed some great participation over the past 5 years. With growth comes the inherent challenges faced by most fledgling youth organizations. Our challenge is that the load of continuing to serve the needs of our members cannot be adequately handled by only a handful of parents. Without a broader commitment by more parents to get involved, as coaches, assistant coaches, division representatives , team moms, admin support etc, our ability to continue growing and maintaining the organization is in jeopardy. Just like the kids, the parents go on to other activities and without a broader base of parents to help run the club , we are left with a skeleton crew.
Our other challenge is deciding on the level of competition we want to participate in. The club was founded as an educational and entirely recreational program. Kids could participate at any level they wished. No commitment was required. As we evolved, we started playing contact rugby and playing against other clubs. The other clubs have and are taking their programs more seriously and with contact , the need to have the kids be in better shape, and be at the training sessions is critical. Both in terms of imparting the fundamental skills of the game, but also in preventing injuries. This will require a bigger commitment from the kids and parents if we decide to take that route. With a more competitive program will come the desire to play other clubs. With this we will have to join the league which runs through the end of April. We historically lose a lot of kids to baseball at the beginning of March, and this may be a challenge if we take that route.
With RUGBY having been added to the Olympic Games, youth participation in the United States is going to grow exponentially and the opportunities for these players who start at a young age are limitless. Having had the honor of representing the United States at the Rugby World Cup, I can only imagine what a thrill being an Olympian in Rugby could be. This being one of the World's most popular participation and spectator sports. Our kids could be future Olympians. This will take a great deal of work and dedication.

We have choices.
1. We can be a purely recreational non contact program. This will allow the kids to get a taste of the game without the requisite commitment and need for higher level training and coaching. We would have a two month season, January through February with intrasquad games and scrimmages.
2. We can get enough parent commitment to take the club to the next level which will require a much more structured and professional approach
Either way we will need more parental involvement.
This being said, we will be having a parent's meeting on Wednesday October 28th at Casa De Pizza in West Hills at 8pm.
Based on the outcome of this meeting, we will decide the path that we will embark on for the future of West Valley Wolverines.
Best Regards

Shawn Lipman
2010 Season Update
Wolverines are very excited about the 2010 season. We have had a significant interest by parents to get more involved and we will be entering a u12 and U14 team into the Southern California Youth League. We will also have a U10 program for 2010. With rugby now being an Olympic Sport, we will be stepping up our program to provide better coaching for the coaches, broad based training for the kids and a more competitive level of competition.

Watch for more information regarding sign ups.

We will most likely have a clinic in December and the season will begin in January and run through the ned of April for U12 and U12. WIll go through March for U10.

Start letting your kids friends know about this exciting program

With RUGBY having been added to the Olympic Games, youth participation in the United States is going to grow exponentially and the opportunities for these players who start at a young age are limitless. Having had the honor of representing the United States at the Rugby World Cup, I can only imagine what a thrill being an Olympian in Rugby could be. We have a game this Saturday, RAIN or SHINE.

Game time 12:30
Please arrive no later then 11:30 - 11:45.

We're playing ORCA Killer Wales.

This is a note from their coach Mike:

A map to the field is attached. NOTE: There is road construction right in front of the field, so the first driveway (at Dawson Road) or the second driveway (at 3M Drive) might be closed, but ONE will be open. The street address (for GPS systems) is 350 South Lewis Road, Camarillo, CA, HOWEVER, Google maps and Mapquest both identify the field on the correct street, but farther south (near the corner of Pleasant Valley Road), so GPS systems might also.

It's 29 miles from our practice pitch (AC Stelle Middle School) - please give yourself about 35 min if coming from the school.

Please remember to bring mouth guards, head gear and water AND a change of cloths if it's raining.

If you have any questions, just email or call me. My cell is listed below.

If you or your boy is NOT going to be there, please let me know. We are already short about five boys and need everybody to be at the game this weekend.
